I have no empathy for those who based all their religion on negative discrimination amongst human. I wish them a good life but in hell. However, should we claim this guilt for forever? Were they all evil who didn’t treat their own brothers with respect? Should we accept theories which claim this class as inferior or sometimes war defeated enemies? Then why they still worship and preserve the same religion. Why they sing the glory of Gods till date? Was this all Aryan invasion?
Yajnavalkya (Hereafter a Rishi) in his smriti prohibited Sudra from wearing sacred thread and also prohibited from all Yangic karmas. Manus, in the present form, view on Sudra is not acceptable as it is too harsh regarding learning of Vedas. Rishi exclude them from list of twice born also opined no marriage with Sudra woman.
Rishi explained later that who did not perform a Upanayan karma on time are Sudra. Thats it, yes thats it. To be twice born one must go through Upanayan karma and who didnt perform is Sudra. Since they didnt obtain the scholarship they are not allowed for further Yagya karma.
What is this fuss about Rig Veda then? Purusha shukta named foot of lord as Shudra, there is no mention of any class of people. So veda is not blemish here. Like any society cant be without skillful people who forward it, Purusha cant be without foot.
While establishing a society and excluding people from inner circle, they must have thought either exclusion list will be too small via fear of punishment or the list will be too large which will not affect daily life of anyone. Later must be the case, like we can still observe two types of practice in organized religions. One to general people and one to who are strict and only they are allowed to perform rituals.
However, shantan then instituted at household level too. May be, here the discrimination also got instituted. Those with limited knowledge also gain respect and authority they didn’t deserve and commanded discrimination.
Whatever may be whatever, Sudra were not people who were untouchable, neither inferior nor any outsider or insider defeated.
They may be people who choose not to practice it in strict level. Or who didn’t believe in Vedas. They opt not to go through Upanayan karma. After all Vedas believe more in metaphysical realities than working at ground level. People are free not to believe in such doctrine and to opt whatever form of worship they find agreeable to them. One can worship same deity and yet don’t believe in Vedas or Rituals of Vedas.
