May be only those endowed with brilliancy of Sanskrit grammar will turn text of Vedas into reality. Many English translation I read (some parts) are lifeless. It's better to memorize and repeat the verses without meaning. Verses are like honey and translations are like poisons. They lack both sweetness and substance.
However, the case with translation of Upanishad may not be that absurd. One reason is elaborated writing of Adi Guru Shankaracharya's on subject matters. In that way over smart writer too will be forced to accept the authority and his writings unlike Vedas.
After criticizing people of great merit by whose grace fool like me could learn something, let me focus on Indra. Whether Puranas write more or less about Indra, he is always center Godhead for me. Partly because my child brain captured liveliness of Indrajatra in the valley. Also, Arjuna is the son of Indra or human form of Indra and in one incident Shri Krishna may have challenged him, but he always guide the Arjuna.
Beside Shri Krishnas favor, Arjuna's merit is based on his focus on his skills of Hands. May be no other main characters of Mahabharata lack divine grace from their birth. Arjuna earned all his merit by sole practice of his own.
So how the Indra who is given some thunder in Vedas who is always fighting and his Son Arjuna who also happen to fight every time be so great that whole Veda couldn't resist praising him. For this Kenopnishad gives the explanation that he is the one who couldn't see Bramha but neared him as said by Uma (she must be Bramha then). In Sathapath Bramahan too he wished to be Prajapati and asked prajapati who are you and the answer was WHO then he abandoned the idea to be Prajapati. Here to he is near Prajapati. In Mahabharata too he is near Hari always never envied Hari, clever enough to secure him but honest enough to complete his own task without any favor.
So, who is this Indra, the Great. As I discussed earlier the man before the mirror is the Reality/Purusha who is the knower, knowledge and known and sole reality, that mirror is Indra. Indra is the only one near Bramha. Other Gods get the bliss of Hari/Uma/Bindrabasini/Bramha through Indra, hence the king of Gods who nourish his subjects. Etc.....
